Winter Bark
Although winter has covered a lot of the landscape with snow, there is still beauty shinning through. Some plants have beautiful showy and textured bark in the winter. These plants are usually deciduous which allows the bark to stand out after the leaves have fallen. Care should be taken when placing them in the landscape. There are a wide range of plants from large trees, like River Birch and Paperbark Maples to shrubs such as Hydangeas and Red Twig Dogwoods. Interesting bark is usually most effective in colder climates with snow where it can be contrasted against evergreens, walls or fences.

The Snow Keeps Coming
The recent snow and ice storm put nearly 850,000 homes and businesses in the dark just in Pennsylvania alone. Our beautiful landscapes look disheveled with broken branches and knocked down trees. Last month in our newsletter we wrote about the effects of snow and ice on plants and how to remove the white stuff safely without damaging them. There is little that can be done about snow covered shrubs and bent limbs at this point, until warmer weather arrives. Leydon Landscaping has been helping their clients clean up after the storms. If you are in need of our services please give our office a call.

A Sign Of Spring
With the extreme cold and snowy weather we could all use a dose of spring. The Philadelphia Flower Show is back in town and the theme this year is “Articulture”, where art meets horticulture. This is a great event to get excited about spring, gather ideas for the garden and see what is new and popular in the green industry. We will be attending the event and looking forward to seeing and learning about new ideas and plants to use in our landscape designs. The Flower Show runs from March 1-9 for more information go to We hope to see you there!
